Our energy history

Educating Californians through dynamic, community-centered history and classroom programs.

Preserving Our Energy Heritage for Future Generations

At the Responsible Energy Council, our education program is rooted in the belief that understanding our local history—especially the legacy of oil and gas development—is essential to fulfilling our mission of building an energy-educated society. Our program focuses on communities in California that have long been home to our state’s vibrant energy industry, where the industry has helped shape the local economy, workforce, and identity. From historic oil fields to family-owned service companies, the story of energy is deeply woven into the fabric of our state.

Our education initiatives seek to bring this heritage to life for students, educators, and the public through hands-on learning experiences, historical archives, and classroom presentations. We highlight the people, technologies, and places that have defined local energy development for over a century, emphasizing the unique contributions to California’s energy story.

But heritage isn’t just about the past — it’s about context for the future. Our program also explores the continued presence of the oil and gas industry in the Golden State and its evolving role in a changing energy landscape. By learning about both the legacy and current contributions of local energy development, students gain a deeper understanding of where their energy comes from and how it impacts their daily lives.

We are committed to ensuring that community energy heritage is not forgotten—but preserved, celebrated, and used as a foundation for future generations to learn from and build upon.

Ventura County

The Responsible Energy Council seeks to bring energy history and heritage to Ventura County schools. Through an engaging and interactive curriculum, our team works to introduce students to the history of oil and gas extraction in Ventura County — a history that helped shape the region’s economy, identity, and landscape. We provide classroom resources, historical artifacts, oral histories, and local case studies that connect students with the people, places, and technologies that have defined Ventura County’s energy story.
